The European Water Association's professional community highly appreciates the dedicated work of Károly Kovács for the sustainability of European water issues, the development of municipal water management, and the appreciation of the profession and the value of water beyond the borders of Europe.
The Hungarian Water and Sewage Association (MaSZeSZ) joined the European Water Association as a national member in 1998. Károly Kovács first participated in the EWA Council as Vice President of MaSzeSz in 2000, when he joined the Technical and Scientific Committee and the European Sectoral Policy Committee. During his term as Vice President, he also acted as President due to the illness of EWA President. During this time, he worked on EWA's relations with Eurasia, facilitating cooperation between EWA and the ASEM-WATER networks. During his EWA Presidency 2015-2017, he continued to build new professional partnerships, established the Economic Working Group to promote sustainable and affordable environmental and water infrastructure development, and took an active role in the Governing Board of the European Water Innovation Partnership, established by the EU Commission.
Károly Kovács continues to be active in the professional life of EWA and participates in its governance. In 2020, he was elected as a member of the European Commission's Sustainable Finance Platform representing the European Water Association. Károly Kovács is the only formal representative of the water sector and gives sustainability criteria in the water sector for the Platform. The results of the Platform's work will be an indispensable pillar for the completion of the European Green Deal.
The EWA Honorary Member Award was presented at a ceremony at IFAT 2022 in Munich.
